{{ Why I call you “mum” and/or “dad” at your session even though I actually do know your name. }} 😂

So I photographed this awesome fam a few weeks ago. I met Alana at university where we studied Medical Science together… sounds fancy doesn’t it? I’m really just a glorified lab rat in my other job. haha. We have been friends for AGES. She was a bridesmaid in my wedding and I hers… safe to say I know her name really well and (obvs.) I know her hubby Sam’s name too. There is a point coming here I promise…

Any-way, at their shoot I called each of them Mum and Dad instead of calling them by their names. This just comes as instinctual to me now after so many sessions of calling parents this instead of their name. It’s not because I have forgotten your name, no sir-ee! It’s because my attention during a session is to elicit natural responses from your chill’uns. Parents can take direction (mostly) easily but the kids need someone who can draw natural expressions out of them. When you’ve only just met a child and then expect them to stand in front of a scary camera and act natural then you’d better have a few “tricks” up your sleeve. I’m all about the easy-going nature, keeping everything low key and low pressure. I don’t EVER make a child do anything they don’t want to and I am ready to change up the session “flow” at any given moment when a kid cracks the proverbial. Calling the parentals by “mum” and “dad” is just one trick to keep a level playing field between myself and the kids.

Here are a few examples:
“Joseph, can you go and give mummy a big kiss on the cheek.”.
“Now everybody give mummy a tickle!”
“Mum can you please stand over that side with Joseph and Dad is going to stand over the other side with Elizabeth.”
“Dad can you take Elizabeth now and give her an eskimo kiss.”

😎P.s. Dad was most definitely Joseph’s flavour of the month. I couldn’t hardly tear him away! How super sweet though. 😍
