Sharon wanted candid children’s portraits of her most prized possession – her grandson Link. This was to be a surprise birthday present for her daughter’s birthday. I was so happy to be able to spend an afternoon with them in her home and out on the beach.
When beginning to write a blog post about one of my sessions, sometimes the words just don’t come to me. I’m not a natural writer so occasionally I look to poems for inspiration. I googled “quotes about grandmothers” for my inspiration for this blog post (as you do) and here are a few small snippets that came up:
“A house needs a grandma in it.” – Louisa May Alcott
“Grandmas never run out of hugs or cookies.” – Unknown
“If I had known how wonderful it would be to have grandchildren, I’d have had them first.” – Lois Wyse
“It’s such a grand thing to be a mother of a mother – that’s why the world calls her grandmother.” – Unknown
However, in all honesty the overriding feeling in these quotes and so much more have been slapping me in the face from my very first chat on the phone with Sharon. I needn’t have looked any further than that which was staring me right in the eyes. She loves her grandson Link like nothing else in the world. You can hear it in her voice and feel it in the way she speaks about him. They laugh and hug while playing with his train set and they share special moments reading books. There is a gentle-ness between them and a bond that only they know the code to.
Link… What can I say about a boy who feels like such an old soul with a beautiful heart? You are one of the sweetest little boys going around. I loved how you warmed to me so quickly even though you had just woken from a nap. Your love of reading was apparent when you sat down with Poppy (Grandma) to cuddle and hear your favourite stories. I hope that your mum enjoyed this gift of photos from Poppy and I truly hope to meet you again one day.
From Sharon: “We received our beautiful book today. So stunningly beautiful!!! Can’t wait to share it! I’ll certainly be in touch for my next family portrait. Thank-you again. One truly satisfied and overwhelmed client.”
